    Unanswered: configuring listener when 2 versions of oracle on one unix server

    Does anyone have any examples of listener.ora and tnsnames.ora configuration for running 2 versions of oracle on one box, using 1 listener under the highest level version of oracle?

    We are trying to setup a connection to a 10.2.0.3 database and a 10.2.0.4 database all on the same server under a 10.2.0.4 listener and running into various errors no matter what combination of things we try.

    I don't have access right now, but we do this all of the time. Can you post examples of your listener.ora tnsnames.ora files and the errors you are receiving? Also, what flavor of UNIX are you using?

    Talking HIgh or not?

    1) Use the Highest version listener for both db's.

    2) Use two listener one for each version, but you need different ports.

    more info

    Ok, our flavor of unix is sun x-86 which kind of sucks but for the most part runs like solaris.

    we have tried both running on one listener at the highest version (the patch 4) and also running a new listener under the patch 3 instance.

    Here is the error we get when trying to connect to the patch 3 instance under the patch 4 listener:

    An error occured while establishing the connection.
    Type: java.sql.SQLException Error Code: 0
    Message:
    Listener refused the connection with the following error:
    ORA-12519, TNS:no appropriate service handler found
    The Connection descriptor used by the client was:
    broncos.shazamaccess.net:1521:falcon

    Here is listener.ora

    # listener.ora Network Configuration File: /u01/Oracle10g_2/network/admin/listener.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.

    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
    (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
    (SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
    (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/Oracle10g_2)
    (PROGRAM = extproc)
    )
    )

    LISTENER =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = broncos)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    )

    And here is tnsnames.ora

    $ more tnsnames.ora
    # tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File: /u01/Oracle10g_2/network/admin/tnsnames.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.

    PHWP =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = broncos)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = PHWP)
    )
    )

    FALCON =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = broncos)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = FALCON)
    (SID = falcon)
    )
    )

    EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC0))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = PLSExtProc)
    (PRESENTATION = RO)
    )
    )

    When we try to set up a unique listener under patch 3, we cant get the database unregistered from the patch 4 listener.

    Service "falcon" has 1 instance(s).
    Instance "falcon", status READY, has 1 handler(s) for this service...
    Handler(s):
    "DEDICATED" established:0 refused:4371 state:blocked

    got it to work on its own listener

    once i did this
    alter system set LOCAL_LISTENER=FALCON_LISTENER;

    and restarted the instance, i was able to get it to register with the new listener

    so i have the 2 versions working, just have different listeners but thats ok
