    Unanswered: SQL Server 2008 Browser

    Hi,

My knowledge of SQL server is very limited, I just ordered from Sybex the upcoming book Mastering SQL Server 2008. In the meantime, I would like to get your feedback on this issue.

My issue seems to be related to the Browser service, not returning my instance port number.

    When running sqlcmd -E -S SQLSVR01\MSSQLSERVER I get th following error: HResult 0x57, Level 16, State 1

When I run the same command and explicitly put the port number, sqlcmd -E -S SQLSVR01\MSSQLSERVER,1433. It is working.

Is the sqlcmd and osql refer to the Bowser at all? This was working on my SQL 2005 Server, but now, all my scripts would need to be changed...

    Any idea why?

    Thank you

    Martin

How many instances do u have , R u querying the default instance or named instance , Try to check whether SQL server Network and client utility has the port number 1433 set properly in it . Alias in client network utility exist with 1433 , if any changes done at SQL server network utility SQL server services needs to be restarted
