    Unanswered: Creating reports in VB.Net

From a vb.net windows application, I need to be able to create reports and then have the ability to save the report to the sql database and also email the report. I'm trying to figure out the best approach to doing this without having to purchase a 3rd party tool like deskPDF or some of the others. The report needs to be in a format that if the report is emailed, they won't need my application to view the report. I was leaning towards creating the reports in Excel but I'm not sure if I have the ability to make the Excel read-only without the user being able to modify the report. The report must stay in a read-only format. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of back end are you sitting on? SSRS->PDF might be a good fit.

windows 2003 server with sql server 2005 or greater... .pdf would be great but it's a 3rd party tool (and not free) and I'm trying to solve this with what included in .Net.

There is a free product called pdf995 or similar that created uneditable pdfs.

You could try xml and xsl transformations.
