    Database backup

Not sure if this is the right place to post this...

I am working on a tool that would apply new schema changes to the db by executing database scripts to an already existing database. I also need it have an option by which I can revert the db to specific app version without any problem...

For example - I keep upgrading my application version from 1.1 to 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 etc. Each one including database changes..... Now being at version 1.4 i should be able to revert my system to 1.2 or so, and the database changes should also get reverted. I cannot rely on just a database backup/restore option, coz all my data rows inserted after the backup will be removed when i make a restore later....I need to revert the db schema changes, but cannot afford to lose any records inserted lately....

Any suggestion on what can be done on this..

    Yeah, good luck with that.
Most schema changes go hand-in-hand with data changes. Try reverting data back to the state it was in two months ago, while maintaining all the activity that has happened since then as well.
    Ain't gonna happen.
If it's not practically useful, then it's practically useless.
