Refer "How to use SQL Mail (Transact-SQL)" in SQL server 2000 books online

There is a significant amount of setup work that goes along with configuring SQL 2000 to send and receive e-mails. There are several MS KB articles on the exact steps that you have to take.

After all that, I found the results to be less than spectacular, in particular if you are trying to use for something besides alerts (ie, if you're using more than SQL Agent Mail).

There are several third party products out there that will allow you to send e-mail using SMTP from SQL 2000. Just google for SQL 2000 and SMTP and you should get a few hits.

As a caveat, there is a smaller population of these products that allows you to integrate SMTP and SQL Agent Mail.
