providing both sites web servers can see the same db server then 'just' connect to the correct db for login authentication.

Say site A has its own db and youhave implemented the login authentication there, site B has its own data, so site B to authenticate talks to Site A's db. The only problem in my books is providing Site B's webserver can see site A's db. in practise that probably means they should be run with thter same ISP, and ideally on the same physical db server
I'd rather be riding on the Tiger 800 or the Norton

what code do you use at present to connect to the db in site A for secuirty authentication?
replicate that code in site B connecting to the db used for site A

Im also pretty certain that you can refer to tables in a different DB within the same server
