    I tried the following before this ....

    create db bkptest
    create table t
    insert into t values

    db2 UPDATE DATABASE CONFIGURATION USING LOGRETAIN Recovery DEFERRED ;
    db2 UPDATE DATABASE CONFIGURATION USING USEREXIT On DEFERRED ;
    db2 UPDATE DATABASE CONFIGURATION USING TRACKMOD Yes DEFERRED ;

    taken full backup then

    db2 'backup db bkptest to '/home/db2inst1' compress util_impact_priority 30 without prompting'

    insert some values

    taken full online backup

    db2 'backup db bkptest online to '/home/db2inst1/online' compress util_impact_priority 30 include logs without prompting'

    insert some values

    db2 'BACKUP DB bkptest ONLINE INCREMENTAL TO "/home/db2inst1/incremental" COMPRESS UTIL_IMPACT_PRIORITY 30 INCLUDE LOGS WITHOUT PROMPTING'

    insert some values

    db2 'BACKUP DB bkptest ONLINE INCREMENTAL TO "/home/db2inst1/incremental" COMPRESS UTIL_IMPACT_PRIORITY 30 INCLUDE LOGS WITHOUT PROMPTING'

    insert some values

    db2 'BACKUP DB bkptest ONLINE INCREMENTAL TO "/home/db2inst1/incremental" COMPRESS UTIL_IMPACT_PRIORITY 30 INCLUDE LOGS WITHOUT PROMPTING'

    then dropped the db
    db2 'drop db bkptest'

    restored the db using the full online backup image

    1.> db2 'restore db bkptest from /home/db2inst1/online logtarget /home/db2inst1/online'

    2.> db2 'rollforward db bkptest to end of logs and complete OVERFLOW LOG PATH ("/home/db2inst1/online")' -- i got some error msg ..ignored that

    3.> db2 'rollforward db bkptest complete OVERFLOW LOG PATH ("/home/db2inst1/online")'

    Only if I follow above 3 in sequence then I get the db restored back in consistent state, if I run 1,3 ... it didnt work, db remains in roll-forward mode

    ok now after 1,2,3 i hv db in good state and i could see the inserted values before i had taken full online backup....

    now I wanted to apply one of the incremental(no delta) backup ....

    db2 'restore db bkptest INCREMENTAL from /home/db2inst1/incremental taken at 20090324162633 logtarget /home/db2inst1/incremental'

    and it asks me -=>
    {{{
    Warning! Restoring to an existing database that is the
    same as the backup image database. The database files will be
    deleted. do you want to continue (yes/no)
    }}}

    I said yes... this above command has generated the above log....

    After this I could not access the db with errors

    1. db2 connect to bkptest

    SQL1119N A connection to or activation of database "BKPTEST" cannot be made
    because a previous restore is incomplete or still in progress. SQLSTATE=57019

    Red face QL2539W Warning! Restoring to an existing database that is the same as the backup ima

    spent some more time doing the following

    db2 UPDATE DATABASE CONFIGURATION USING USEREXIT Off DEFERRED ;

    db2 UPDATE DATABASE CONFIGURATION USING LOGARCHMETH1 DISK:/home/db2inst1/backup/archived_logs IMMEDIATE ;

    restarted the db manager

    again tried the

    db2 'restore db bkptest INCREMENTAL from /home/db2inst1/incremental taken at 20090324162633 logtarget /home/db2inst1/incremental'

    and got the same behavior now with different logs ...removed out errors of archiving

    I think you've missed the RTFM part. The manual clearly describes the procedure you need to follow when restoring from incremental backups.
