    Unanswered: New to Visual Basic/Visual Studio 2008

    Can anyone suggest a source that explains the principal commands or functions in VB? For example, a command that loads or displays data from an Excel file. I have several books on VB, etc but I can't seem to find these in the index. Once I know what I am searching for, perhaps they are on the internet, also.

    Thanks for your help.

    question

    Are you talking about visual studio 2008 or VB
    these are 2 verry different things

    2008 = .NET (include html and javascript )
    VB = Visual Basic with a captial B

    with VB you could use
    Set app = GetObject(, "EXCELL.Application")
    If app Is Nothing Then
    ' EXCELL. is not running, create new instance
    Set app = CreateObject("EXCELL.Application")
    app.Visible = True
    endif

    with 2008 so .NET

    Visual Studio /VB?

    Thanks for the suggestions. I'll get right on them.

    I have Visual Studio 2008 installed. All of my past programming was in DOS languages such as CLIPPER. My (slight) understanding of current matters is that the Visual Studio environment houses a number of programming languages, including Visual Basic. I have been reviewing a few VB primers and have gained a cursory idea how it works. I have no idea whatsoever about what *NET is. For the time being, I am interested in desktop, not web based applications.

    Thanks for your help.
