Unanswered: Urgent : Oracle listner service not present

    Hello Gurus,

I installed Oracle 10g client on windows XP and windows 2003 server. I have similar issue on both the windows. I do not see a listener service in the services list of Control Panel(from Administrative tools). I have used the net manager to create the Listener for the database. Can somebody please advise? I have done multiple installations but have the same issue coming back . When I try to connect to the database using scott/tiger, it gives the ORA-12541: TNS:no listener.

    Thanks in advance,
    SA

Please explain why it is URGENT for me to solve this problem for you.

You could try using GOOGLE & searching for FAQs on ORA-12541

A common problem is that Oracle gets upset when being loaded on a PC using DHCP to obtain IP#.

Please realize that if/when you are logged directly onto the system hosting Oracle DBMS, then SQL*Net is not required to access the DB.

    Good Luck!

    Hello Anacedent,

I understand when you asked me to "search it" and we very well know how to do that. Forgive my ignorance, Oracle is not my area of expertise. My App uses Oracle as backend and I am trying to make it work as I have an interview in a day. I am unable to understand why there is no listener service in services list. The tnsping also gives me the same error msg. I googled and searched in the forum, but could not get the right answer. I would really appreciate if someone here can help me fix it.

    Thanks again,
    SA

I'd like to see via CUT & paste what resulted from following commands.

    lsnrctl status
    lsnrctl start
    lsncrtl status

    Hello,

Thanks for your reply. This is what I get when I type in the command.

    lsnrctl status

'lsnrctl' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

Similar error for other commands. This is probably because I do not have any listener service running in the services list

Please let me know if you have any ideas.

No, this is because you don't have Oracle's BIN directory in your path
Either add the BIN directory to your PATH or run those statements while Oracle's BIN directory is your current one.

The error message that you provided clearly shows that you are either not in that directory or that your installation is somewhat wrong.
    What does dir LSNRCTL.* show?

    Hello Shammat,

I am sure I am in the bin directory while executing the lsnrctl status or start commands.

The command dir LSNRCTL.* gives File not found message.

    Anacedent,

The articles in the link couldnt help me much.

    Thanks,

    Start a command window
change directory to what what you think is Oracle's HOME directory.
issue the following commands as typed directly below
    cd bin
    pwd
    set
    dir /w

Now using CUT extract all the 4 commands above & the resultant output &
PASTE everything into your next response.

Then your Oracle installation is totally screwed up, or you don't have the server installed but only the client

    YES!

Now I understand what is & is NOT happening!

You are logged onto a PC with only Oracle client s/w installed.

The Oracle listener only exists on the Oracle DB server system; not client.

On which system does the Oracle RDBMS software and database reside?
You can lead some folks to knowledge, but you can not make them think.
