    Unanswered: cannot connect to sql server

    I cannot connect to sql server thru its name in enterprize mgr, in query analyzer and also thru application which is using this sql server...

    but i can connect thru ip address...


    Please help

    Can you ping the host ?
    Is the Service running on the host ?

    cannot connect to sql

    yes i can ping the host.

    SQL services are running..

    the problem is ocuuring only between my pc and sql server. other pcs can connect to sql server

    my pc - windows 2003 with sp2 and sql server with SP4

    sql server - windows 2003 with sp2 and sql server (SP not yet installed for sql)

    maybe you have a wrong setting in your ipconfig or your hosts file, check vs. other desktop that is working.

    check hosts

    see if you have a predefined host connection for the server in your hosts file on your local machine.

    c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts - see if it is mapped to a different ip. Sometimes people add entries in their host files and they forget which will try to re-route them to another location. Just a guess.

    Check Client configuration of the server and ur PC and create an alias with server name , respective port number(port number could be tracked from SQL errorlog also)

    Try vping from local PC and find out whether its responding

    Check whether ur hostname mapped to the IP address properly
