    Unanswered: lob segments

    hi Guys

Can somebody please explain to me exactly - but in simple words - what 'lob segments' are and what their purpose is in Oracle?
(I see them referenced in a report produced by one of our DBA's about segments taking up the most space in the database)

Also - if one considers a specific lob segment - how can one identify which table(s) are associated with the lob segment?

Apologies if the questions seem trivial, but i need to learn whilst on the run as I've been thrown in at the deep end!

    Talking Large OBjects..

A LOB segment is a portion (segment) of physical storage where the data related to a LOB is recorded.

When you define a LOB column in a table, you (optionally) have to supply the parameters of where you want the rdbms to store the data related to that column.

PS: To find out which table(s) are associated with the lob segment query the DBA_LOBS view
