    Unanswered: Estimate index size

    Hello, All:

I am planning hard drive size that single table index file is in. How to estimate index size? And how big is single table index possible? This table has 6 mil records now.

    Thanks

Depends on how wide, datatype and Len of columns in the index, and clustered vs. non-clustered. 6MM is not a large table, relatively speaking.

Do a sp_spaceused on the table to see how large it is currently.

Thanks for the reply. One column clustered index. The storage team needs a planning anyway that should be from some calculation.

Since a clustered index is physically on the table itself, relatively little/no space should be used, nor can you put it on a different device than the table itself.
