Unanswered: Error starting 10g database on Linux

I have installed Oracle 10.2.0 on openSUSE 11.1 Linux with no errors recorded from the installation.
I have started the database listener; however, I cannot startup the database. Here are the following messages using 2 different methods of "startup".

    Method 1: Startup command
    oracle@linasys01:~/product/10.2.0/asysr11/bin> ./sqlplus /nolog

    SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on Tue Jun 16 14:49:57 2009

Copyright (c) 1982, 2005, Oracle. All rights reserved.

    SQL> conn sys/password as sysdba
    Connected to an idle instance.

    SQL> startup
ORA-10997: another startup/shutdown operation of this instance inprogress
ORA-09967: unable to create or open lock file
Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory

    Method 2: Using spfile
    oracle@linasys01:~/product/10.2.0/asysr11/bin> ./sqlplus /nolog

    SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on Tue Jun 16 14:49:57 2009

Copyright (c) 1982, 2005, Oracle. All rights reserved.

    SQL> conn sys/password as sysdba
    Connected to an idle instance.

    SQL> startup pfile=/home/oracle/product/10.2.0/asysr11/dbs/init.ora
ORA-10997: another startup/shutdown operation of this instance inprogress
ORA-09967: unable to create or open lock file
Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory

In both cases, the ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID variables were set. I have tried "startup force" command in sqlplus, but I still cannot start up the database. Can someone offer a solution for this problem?

    Thanks,
    Anthony

    sqlplus
    / as sysdba
    shutdown abort
    startup
    select * from v$version;
    exit

CUT commands above & PASTE into command window

Is there a file missing that is needed for the startup of oracle? Please advise.

    >Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory
Above indicates some sort of OS related glitch

Even though you don't follow directions, I try again.

Post Operating System (OS) name & version for DB server system.
Post Oracle version to 4 decimal place of database s/w.

When was the last time Oracle started?
What changed between then & now?

    post results from
    env | sort

    >ORACLE_SID=/asysr11
    possible problem above
    export ORACLE_SID=asysr11
execute line above. It may fix things, but may not

    cd $ORACLE_HOME/dbs
    sqlplus
    / as sysdba
    create pfile from spfile;
    startup
    exit
    cat initasysr11.ora

CUT & PASTE results from above commands

Thanks for the second set of eyes! The ORACLE_SID was indeed incorrect. So, I corrected the error in the .profile and started the database successfully.

ORA-10997: another startup/shutdown operation of this instance inprogress

    Hi,

I am getting the same error on windows paltform.

Could you please advise. I lastly worked on this DB couple of months before. No much changes done to PC except browser upgrade and that shouldn't disturb this.
