    Unanswered: Sybase 11.9.2 - compress:: dump

    running on HP_UX (some really ancient version)

    we'd like to compress our backup files to correct some disk space issues. I've found a couple possible syntax

    compress::compression_level
    compress=compression_level

    from my reading we need to use the 'compress::' option. This should be fine for us as we're dumping to local files

    our current code look a bit like

    dump database PRODDB to '/saves/dumps/PRODDB.dmp'
    stripe on '/saves/dumps/PRODDB_S1.dmp'
    stripe on '/saves/dumps/PRODDB_S2.dmp'
    stripe on '/saves/dumps/PRODDB_S3.dmp'
    ...

    would the new code look like

    dump database PRODDB to compress:: 1 '/saves/dumps/PRODDB.dmp'
    stripe on compress::1 '/saves/dumps/PRODDB_S1.dmp'
    stripe on compress::1 '/saves/dumps/PRODDB_S2.dmp'
    stripe on compress::1 '/saves/dumps/PRODDB_S3.dmp'
    ...

    The correct syntax would be
    Code:
    dump database PRODDB to 'compress::/saves/dumps/PRODDB_S1.cmp'
    stripe on 'compress::/saves/dumps/PRODDB_S2.cmp'
    stripe on 'compress::/saves/dumps/PRODDB_S3.cmp'
    stripe on 'compress::/saves/dumps/PRODDB_S4.cmp'
    However compressed dumps is not supported on that version
    If you have a later version e.g. 12.5 then you can copy the libcompress.so file to the lib directory of your 11.9.2. installation and then the compress syntax will work.

    PS. I suggest you change the extension to something other than dmp so you won't mistake it for a normal dump

    Alternately, you can compress the dump file using UX compress or gzip utilities. The man pages have all the details.
