    Unanswered: Conversion from MEMO type to TEXT

    Hi all,

    I'm sorry if this is an elementary question, but I was given a large data set from a client. I am attempting to do some basic matching on this data, but the data set was set to memo format.

    I've already tried going into the table design and converting into text using the drop down menu. Unfortunately, MS access says I run out of memory/hard drive space and the conversion fails. Are there any alternatives? How can I fix this?

    Welcome to the forums.

    Maybe consider making a new text-type field (give it a temporary name if necessary), then run an UPDATE query something like:
    UPDATE tblName
    SET tblName.fldTextName = LEFT(tblName.fldMemoName, 255);
    And then (once you've verified it worked, of course) delete the memo field (and rename the text field if necessary).

    Note: You'll need to put your table/field names in there, and then set the character limit to match whatever you have set for the text-type field property.
