    Question Unanswered: environment variables

    hi guys,

    i have just started as DBA, i am working on solaris SPARC platform with Oracle 10g release 2

    the problem is whenever i login as oracle user my sqlplus command not working and my ORACLE_HOME,ORACLE_SID are displaying blank. every time i have to execute $ . .profile command then its working. plz tell me the solution so that i connect to sqlplus directly without executing the bash profile.

    and one more thing is when i login as root user and from there going to oracle everything is working fine.

    plz tell me the solution.

    thanks & regards,
    Raja Challagulla

    Please post me your .profile contents and root's .profile contents.

    How are you entering into oracle from root.

    Is it su oracle or su - oracle

    i am logging from root as $su - oracle

    my oracle user .profile content is

    ORACLE_SID=cpestdby; export ORACLE_SID
    ORACLE_HOME=/oraeng/oracle/product/10.2.0; export ORACLE_HOME
    PATH=/usr/local/bin; export PATH
    PATH=$PATH:/usr/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/openwin/bin:/usr/sadm/bin
    PATH=$PATH:/usr/sfw/bin:/usr/Xll/bin:/usr/j2se/bin
    PATH=$PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/bin
    TNS_ADMIN=$HOME; export TNS_ADMIN
    DISPLAY=10.4.49.146:0.0; export DISPLAY

    Hi Raja,

    I am finding problem with your PATH environment variable.
    On you log on as "oracle" just type the command
    echo $PATH
    Does it show the oracle home path.

    After every PATH variable in your .profile, there should be export PATH as follows
    PATH=/usr/local/bin; export PATH
    PATH=$PATH:/usr/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/openwin/bin:/usr/sadm/bin; export PATH
    PATH=$PATH:/usr/sfw/bin:/usr/Xll/bin:/usr/j2se/bin; export PATH
    PATH=$PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/bin; export PATH
