Unanswered: Best practices for Upgrading a Product Database

Want to know what are the best practise followed while upgrade the Database to new version/schema.

What we follow is there is main batch file which is excuted by the DBAs. This file in turn calls a schema.sql file and data.sql file and then procedure files.

We need a better solution for handling errors and logging the upgrade process.

There is not nearly enough information in your post to advise you.

Is this a 3rd party database application, or one you have developed in-house? How different are the schemas?
If it's not practically useful, then it's practically useless.

Best practice is to do LOTS of test migrations first.
