Unanswered: creation of 32 bit instance on 64 bit System ?

    Hi All

How to create 32 bit instance on 64 bit System ?

I am using DB2UDB v9.5 fp 2 . Actually my application team requested me to create a 32 bit instance to configure their Application . But there is no option in db2icrt command to mention the bit width in 9.5 .

db2icrt command will automatically create the instance based on the sys configuration, if sys is 64 bit , it will create the 64 bit instance . same for 32 bit also ....

Some where i saw , When we changed some code in the db2profile file , the 64 bit instance will work as 32 bit instance .... could u please give me the details of the process ..

Please suggest me the resolution in this issue...

    and ANY Alternative ways ....?

    Thanks in Advance ...
    Srinivas.

As far as I know: you can install a 32bit version of db2 on a 64 bit O.S.
All databases on that server will be 32 bit.

Beginning with DB2 9.1, the instance bitness is determined by the platform bitness; you cannot specify bitness when creating an instance.

    Thanks for your suggestions !!

    Nick,

I know , we cannot mention the bitwidth when we are creating the instance from the V9.1 . But if i installed 32 bit db2 s/w on 64 bit machine , Will all the instances work as 32 bit instances ...?

Why would you want to use a 32bit instance? There is usually no reason for that. A 64bit DB2 instance can execute 32bit stored procedures/UDFs, and a 32bit client can talk to a 64bit server just fine.

I doubt you have that option. As Herr Stolze said, there's no reason to do that anyway.

I believe client instances include support libraries for 32-bit and 64-bit applications so it's possible to run 32-bit applications within the 64-bit (basically set LIBPATH to sqllib/lib32)
