Exclamation Unanswered: Attach partition Vs Add partition

    Hi All,

We are using DB2 UDB V9.7 on AIX. Some of the tables are defined on range partitions. I have couple of doubts on this.

    1. What is the difference between attach partition and add partition?
    2. Which one is best for OLAP environment? why?

If my question is not clear, please let me know.

    With Advance Thanks,

    Balakrishnan Ethiraju

with ADD PARTITION you add a new range to a table and then load the data into it.

in ATTACH PARTITION you create a 'basic' table (and usually load the data) and then add a range to the partition table by attaching the already existing table.

ADD or ATTACH does not have anything to do with OLAP environment. It depends on your partitioning range and data loading. ie, if you load data into a table on a monthly basis and have paritions by month, then you may load the data into the table and then attach it , thereby reducing overhead/locking on the existing data when loading. but, if you have a parition by month, and then load data on an hourly basis, attach has little meaning .. so you can add the partition to the table and then add data ...
