    Ok : I'mclarifing my request.

We're moving a part of our Oracle db to Postresql 8.4.

    We planned to have
    - ~200 simulateous connexions via internet
    - the biggest table = ~1.5*10^6 lines

We are on a P6 machine (IBM).

    We planned to use Slony.
We have no feedback about PgCluster2.

Did you already see this type of environnement en production ?

Judging the comments on the Postgres mailing list, this is considered a "medium sized" database. So I don't think it should be a problem.

When you talk about "connections via internet" I assume you are talking about a web-application. Are you talking about 200 concurrent sessions (=connections) to the application server, or do you plan to have a connection pool that allows up to 200 concurrent connections to the database?

But still: 200 direct connections to Postgres should not be a problem.

Did you already see this type of environnement en production ?
This seems to be a "standard" installation (as far as the posts from the mailing list talk about clustered solutions).

pgCluster does indeed seem like a dead project.

You really want to post that question to the PG Admin mailing list. You'll reach a lot more experienced users there (and the developers as well)

Note: it won't be released for a while yet, but pg 9.0 (currently in alpha) supports streaming replication (Hot Backup,) which allows reads from the master as well as the backup (writes only to the master.)

And, since you're migrating from Oracle to pg, you might also want to look at EnterpriseDB. (Their PostgresPlus products are commercialized versions of postgresql with clustering options and enhancements for easy oracle migration. Although their licensed products not free, they offer commercial support and much lower licensing costs than Oracle...)
