    Unanswered: new user login problem

This is on ubuntu 10.04, postgresql 8.4.4

I created a user by user postgres with password specified but when using the new account, psql didn't ask for password.

Then if I use another ubuntu account and try to login psql using the new account, it still not prompt for password but simplay says
psql: FATAL: Ident authentication failed for user

I just want an account do the most common dba and development jobs. How do I fix the problem?

    Thanks

It defaults to using your OS login when you connect using sockets. You can connect using tcp/ip by specifying host and port or change the "local" entry in pg_hba.conf to md5 or something other than ident.

Thanks a lot artacus72. I edited pg_hba.conf 'local' entry to md5 and it worked!
