In theory, theory and practice are identical. In practice, theory and practice are unrelated.

Yikes, you've unleashed the question monster!

Are you a sysadmin, user, or both? What platform (Linux, Unix, Windows, other) are you running? What version of PHP do you have installed?

Do you use RPMs ? If so, which ones? Can you use non-RPM executable/application builds?

A lot depends on what type of system you have and what liberties you can take with the system (i.e. if you have root or Administrator access and sysadmin authority).

    lol

I am a user on a shared host. I am waiting for a response from my host, but they may refuse my installation request since I use a shared server... ideally, I would like access to the code so I can simply include it manually.

    MySQL
    Server: Localhost via UNIX socket
    Server version: 5.1.46-log

    phpMyAdmin
    Version information: 3.2.4

So I wrote my own function.
As it turned out, my shared host did finally install the package.

Thanks very much for the advice
