sqlplus can only access the most recent command

You didn't specify operating system you use. On MS Windows XP, when I access SQL*Plus via command prompt (typing "sqlplus un/pw", which is NOT the same as using SQL*Plus provided by Oracle and accessible through Start - All programs - Oracle etc. menu), previous commands can be retrieved with the "up" arrow key. No problem. On OpenVMS - no way; it worked just like Anacedent said (only the last command). I never used other operating systems with Oracle.

Assuming you're using Windows (you mention 'cmd' in your post), there are occasions if you're repeating previous commands that the up arrow no longers brings up the command you want & you have to press the down arrow instead - it's to do with where you are within the 'previous commands' buffer.

On SQL*PLUS prompt, I don't think you can see the history of the statements that you have typed in. Only the last statement can be seen by using 'list' command.
    Thanks and Regards,
