Red face Unanswered: Student marks database

    Hi,

I would like to creat a database that records students marks. There are several different year groups, several differnt topics of study and several different marks that can be awarded. Can anyone offer me a starting point as i am far from being an expert in MS Access.

    sure

you'll need a students table, a yeargroups table, and a topics table

i'll leave you to figure out where the marks go

    students
    courses
    units
studentcourses (an intersection of students and courses which identifies what students are doing what courses)
CourseUnits defines what units comprise whatcourses
studentCourseUnits defines what units this student is doing in this course
assesmenttypes, defines the type of assessment, eg essay, practical, exam...
UnitAssessments defines the assessments set for this unit
StudentIUnitAssessemts records the marks for this student in this unit on this assessment

I'd rather be riding on the Tiger 800 or the Norton

Thanks for your reply. Our students are split into 3 year groups, each year groups studies 3 topics, Each topic will be awarded a level grade and an effort grade. Each student will recieve a report for each topic that will have comment about what they have achieved and also what they have not achieved. There are 9 topics in total, three for each year group. So the tables i have so far are as follows:

    Students
    Student_Unit
    Student_Year Group
    Year_Group
    Student Unit Statement
    Unit Statement
    Units
    Unit Assessment

Does it look like im along the right lines?

    I dunno
    what is your requirement
does your proposed design meet that requirement
having done that does your proposed design meet other (unspecified) requirements
how does you design handle details of student assessments over time, eg comparing al year 1's over the years

fundamentally its about your design meeting your requirements, not anyone elses quickly sketched out ideas.
