    What decimal value is the "accent character"?
    post results from following SQL

    SELECT ASCIISTR(LAST_NAME) FROM YOUR_TABLE WHERE LAST_NAME LIKE 'DE%';

    Code:
      1* select * from emp where instr(ename,'''') > 0

    You could have also done

    select * from emp where instr(ename,chr(44)) > 0
    Bill
