Unanswered: Elaborate details regarding unable to restore 2000 Bkup in SQL 2005

I had taken a backup of a SQL database in SQL server 2000. The file did NOT have any extension and the name was simply DMART.

I tried to restore the backup from MSSM *Microsoft SQL Server Manager) but the backup file was not appearing in the list. I then renamed to file to DMART.BAK. Doing so the file now appeared in the list but i got an error (Please see below).

Restore failed for Server 'ALPHA_TOSHIBA'. (MIcrosoft.SqlServer.Smo)

    Additional Information
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Directory lookup for the file "D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\DMART.mdf" failed with the operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.).

I then made a folder uner D drive as D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data and placed the DMART file over there but changed the extension from BAK to MDF. But still am getting the same error.

Can someone PLEASE help and guide me. I just want to know what I'm doing wrong

Will be very thankful for your kind help.
