Question Unanswered: Migrating SQL Express 2005 to PostgreSQL 8.4.4

    Hi All,

Please help me to write two scripts that would transfer all the information from a legacy SQL Express 2005 database to the new, empty PostgreSQL 8.4.4 and SQL Server 2008 databases.

    What will be my approach..?

    Thanks in advance
    raj

The problem you have is you need someone who knows both systems and has migrated previously in the same direction as you. PostgreSQL doesn't have a massive following I'm afraid.
I imagine there are commercial products out there that would help, other than that some concerted googling to search forums such as this.

I assume you know getting from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 is trivial though yes?

I migrated some databases from SQL2000 to PostgreSQL about 4 years ago and it was all a manual process. I found a few freeware tools that purported to output your SQL Server db schema in PG format but it didn't cut the mustard for me, it got things wrong all over the place.

I ended up using SQL server management studio to create a script for the creation of all tables and views and manually adjusted them all to the correct syntax so I could run the script on PG. It wasn't too much work, took me half a day to fix up a script for about 500 tables and views.

Functions is a whole other kettle of fish... I had to rewrite all of them from scratch which was a few days in itself.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the replies.

They gave me more understanding of the task at hand.

Is there some thing in postgresql that would allow me to this migration..?

    Or

Writing a script for that would help me minimize the manual process.
Can i write such scripts in postgresql..?

    thanks,
    raj

you can use tool for dis kind of migration

    .
b4 sql i wokred in postgers platform nd i had to transfer data from sql to postgres. wt i did is that i used a tool called "Kettle 3.2" whcih supports all kind of database at the same time.

In the transformation page, data got migrated frm sql to text/ excel and excel to postgers database,
it took 4-5 mins for the entire process

    nice tool..try it

    thanks

    Hi,

Thanks for your suggestion, I will try it in data migration phase.
But initially the database schema needs to be migrated ....

Any thoughts on how to do this.....
I will go through kettle and see if it support anything for this

    Thanks

    Hi,

As far as I came to that Kettle does not support database schema migration.

    Is this true...?

Any other tool which support database schema migration also...?

    Please share your thoughts...

    Thanks,
    raj
