Unanswered: Using Autonumbering on existing values

I am creating a new table with Field 1 being a historical reference number,
    and Fields 2 & 3 text.
There are 3 records to be entered with different values in Field 1. (14, 27, 42)
I would then like to define Field1 as being AutoNumber,
so that the next record entered will add a value of 1 to the
    highest historical value. (14, 27, 42, 43).
    And then 44, 45, 46 etc etc
    Is this possible ?

You can't hand enter the 3 records, but you can insert them with an append query. Then the autonumber should pick up at the next number.

Can you go into greater detail on how this is done? I have tried in one of my databases before to copy autonumbered records to a new table, and the autonumber always starts at 1. The only way I have gotten this to work is by copying table structure + data and manually deleting the records I did not want. I would be interested in a way to do this as well to save time.

    INSERT INTO TableName(AutonumberField, TextField, NumericField)
    VALUES(14, "Whatever", 123)

don't rely on any meaning in an autonumber column. about the only thing you can imply is that there may be some form of date/time order but even then you cannot rely on that.

if your column needs to have a numerical sequence that has relevance outside the system then you will have to develop your own mechanism to do that.
I'd rather be riding on the Tiger 800 or the Norton
