    Unanswered: SQL 6.5 Backup

    Hi All,

I wish to run a backup on one of our SQL 6.5 Database Servers.

I would like to do a full backup of all databases to a specified network location. I have been searching around and can only find details of saving the backups in the 'backup' folder in Program Files \ MSSQL.

Are you able to point me in the right direction, or help me with a task to:

    • All DB's Full Backup
    • In the location \\fileserver\sharename\SQLserver

If you don't believe this is possible, could you help create a task to backup to a different location on the local machine.

    Hi All,

I have done some more reading, and I believe this may be a solution to my answer.

If I create a Database Device, which the location is the network share, I can use the current backup script (just changing the Device). This means that the current full backups will still run, but it will save them onto this network share I specified.

Has anyone else had experience doing this on a SQL 6.5 Server? If not, do you think it will work?

It should work, so long as the network connection between the two machines is reliable. You can also specify a location in the DUMP command such as:
dump database dbname to disk = 'C:\temp\dbnamebkup.bak' with init
This command will create a brand new backup file in the directory C:\Temp.
