Unanswered: difference between fixpacks 3 and 3a for example?

    Hi,

I was looking at the fixpacks for version 9.7 and noticed that there's 3 and 3a..should I go ahead and install 3a if I want the latest greatest fixes? thanks!

IBM publishes an APAR list of what is fixed in each fixpack, so you can see the difference. Yes, you should install the latest 3a fixpack unless you already have 3 installed somewhere else and need to duplicate that environment exactly.

Fixpaks with letters often appear when an important fix needs to be released between regularly scheduled fixpaks. In other words, you should install fixpak 3a rather than 3. By the way, fixpak 4 will be out soon, so you may want to wait until then.
