    Unanswered: Queries regarding DB2 DBA

    Hi,
I am new to this forum and aspire to be a DB2 DBA. I have Mainframes background. I need some guidance on the following points
    1. Before going for a certification in DB2, I want to start learning on my own. Please send me the Links/Documents for the same to start as a beginner.
    2. Whats the latest version of DB2 Certification?
    3. How is the market and job opportunities for a DB2 DBA these days?
    4. What exactly is DB2 UDB? Will it be a better option for me(Since I come from Mainframes background)?
    5. What all Certificate Exams I will have to take inorder to be a DB2 DBA and how much they cost?

    Thanks & Rgds

i don't know in what country you are but if i were you i would stay with db2 on zOS - there is a shortage of db2 dbas on mainframe in Canada and US. especially that you already have a mainframe experience. there will be a need for more in the future once they start retiring...

for the certification for db2 v9 on zOS google 'Test 000-732: DB2 9 DBA for z/OS'. test for next version 10 is available as well.

    good luck!

Don't have to take any to be a DB2 DBA

My previous experience with DB2 on mainframe and AIX:

    m/f -> 9-5 Mon-Fri; long coffee breaks and lunches
AIX -> forget about regular working hours, short or no coffee breaks/lunches

    Possibly, things have changed.

For me, DB2 on AIX and Linux is a lot more fun.

I fully agree with Bello4ka about fun and breaks and i absolutely love working with db2 on unix/aix/linux. but in the long run 'nobody here is getting any younger' and there is a lot of young dbas/luw who are willing to work for very little money. i work in the bank now and many of our db2 dbas on luw are kids. demand for db2 dbas on m/f is growing fast and they make more money as well.

Kids at the bank don't want to learn mainframe? Do you work with both luw and m/f or just m/f? Maybe it's time for me to switch back to m/f and start feeling younger again (we have many kids as well )

it's not that they don't want to learn DB2 on zOS, Bella, they were hired to work on DB2/LUW only in the first place. Even if our group is DB2 support on both m/f and LUW there are no people (except me) who work on both.
So I am the youngest on m/f and one of the oldest on LUW

what is bothering me is - i like to work with DB2/LUW better than DB2/zOS and want to progress (certifications, experience, etc) but do not want to compete with younger dbas on luw who work for less money. make sense?
