Unanswered: connectivity issues in sql server 2008

when tried to connect to sql server 2008,
got the below error message. Can any one suggest me solution?

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)

    Can you ping that server?

In theory, theory and practice are identical. In practice, theory and practice are unrelated.

    As already asked:
    1)can you ping?
2)have you checked all the basics i.e SQL Server service is on, the Browser service is on?
    3)Is the server name resolvable?

Are you connecting SSMS from the Same Server or remotely ? if remotely then check the Firewall

if using Named instance then use this string to connect the SSMS

    From Server

    ServerIP\InstanceName

    From Remote Machine

    ServerIP\InstanceName,port
