    I have seen a 1tb database

Mine is 800meg with over 10,000 clients user are In 15 location all over new Zealand.

My biggest table is only 70,000 records.

The good thing about SQL your limit is how big you hard drives are

And when did iops get irrelevant? Yes, SQL Server can have a 2 TB database on a 2TB SATA drive, but it will (in most cases) be extremely slow. Unfortunately, I've seen this kind of configuration way too often.

I sling terabytes in sql server on a regular basis and for a number of years. If you are having performance issues you either have a poor design, poor code, poor configuration or poor hardware. and I never blame the hardware until the other possibilities have been eliminated.
“If one brings so much courage to this world the world has to kill them or break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.” Earnest Hemingway, A Farewell To Arms.

I have several clients with 10+ Tb databases on Microsoft SQL Server, and I've consulted on two that are much larger.
