What facility did you use to enter the command, and exactly what command did you issue?

Spufi is DB2 for z/OS. The describe table command is not SQL, but a command option of DB2 Linux, UNIX, Windows and not sure if supported by DB2 for z/OS. Please consult the proper DB2 documentation (which is different for the different DB2's).

OK thank you. I am very new to mainframes. so the environment is quite confusing.

I will try to get some documentation.

but can you tell me what other kinds are there to describe a table..

I don't recall if there is simple command like DESCRIBE TABLE in DB2 LUW, but check out the DB2 system catalog tables that are documented in the appendix of the SQL Reference Manual. You can query the catalog for tables and columns to get what you need. Make sure you have doc for DB2 z/OS and not DB2 LUW. Most DB2 z/OS shops have either IBM or 3rd party tools that will show you the schema via a ISPF panel.
