Unanswered: What options for online upgrades ??

To upgrade db2 from 9.1 to 9.8 on AIX, how do we upgrade with no downtime ??

I was reading a job description for a DB2 upgrade position , came across above requirement.

    Thanks for your help

It's not possible to do that upgrade with no downtime, but there are ways to limit it. However, if the syscatspace is SMS (default in 9.1), then not going to be easy to do quickly.

BTW, DB2 9.8 is the pureScale only release.

    Yes,

I agree, still wanted to confirm the ways to minimize downtime.

That I saw from job description from a big company. Now, the question arises, is 9.8 being purescale only not compatible with 9.1 databases.

What are limitations in this scenerio.

    Thanks Marcus,

I don't know what you mean by compatiable. 9.8 is similar to 9.7 with pureScale feature. But you may have to upgrade to 9.7 first and then 9.8, I don't recall (you can look at the doc to find out). But there are some scenarios that may require an export/load of the database (or db2move, etc) due to tablespace restrictions in pureScale, depending on how the exist database is defined.

Of course, pureScale is a whole 'nother animal in itself, which requires some new DBA skills to set up and make it work.
