    Unanswered: copy datafile between instances

    Hi

Has anyone done this? Rather, is it possible?
I have 2 separate instances, "A" and "B". I would like to bring the TS/datafiles from "A" to "B" and not overwrite the system TS on "B", i.e. I would like to keep the original system TS on "B".

I can use Transportable TS, but I was wondering if there is another method in which I can do a straight copy of the datafiles.

Assume the version is not an issue - I am able to use any version, preferably a supported version 10g and upwards.

    Not possible
You can lead some folks to knowledge, but you can not make them think.

    additionally..

When copying the files from "B" to "A", the arc logs are available from "B". Can I do an incomplete recovery when the file are copied? and sync the system and control on "B"...

What part of NO! do you NOT understand?
Oracle has gone to great effort to ensure data integrity, & what you desire renders data integrity null & void.

use transportable tablespaces or nothing at all.

    copy datafile between instances

Oracle has a new RMAN feature.. SWITCH COPY.

Can I use this to backup the Database on Server "A" and then copy the backup set to Server "B" and do a switch copy of the tablespace only.

    Scenario.

At one point Instance X on Server "B was created using a copy of the backup of instance X from Server "A".

It's possible over time instance X on server "B" has changed with various testing scripts and data.

We are looking at refreshing instance "X" on server "B" again with a copy of Instance "X" on server "A". Except, we want to refresh only a few tablespaces, excluding the system.

Can we use a backup set on Server A and just do a switch copy of the tablespaces we wan to carry over. If not, is there a simpler way....
