Unanswered: Best dataype to store a version number

I have a C# app linked to a SQL db and I need to store it's version number in a table (could be something like 1.2.789) but I cannot find any datatype which allows me to do this.
I could create three fields in the table for each number but I don't want to.
    Can anyone help?Thank you

You're looking for a datatype to allow you to store denormalized data within a field?
Understandably, there isn't anything specifically designed for this.
You can use a simple character string, or the XML datatype.
If it's not practically useful, then it's practically useless.

If you are just inserting this value from an application then why not use text or varchar() datatype?

Varchar (20) accepts it. I could've sworn that when I tried Varchar (50) it gave me an error. Thanks for the replies anyways
