    light weight, embedded
I'd look at something like Apache Derby or SQL Lite
I'd rather be riding on the Tiger 800 or the Norton

I'd suggest you read up on what embedded means
if you are designing the app then you should control the db service. not to sure about Derby, but SQL Lite is like Filemaker and Access JET file based. and so providing you take adequate consideration of the security implications and make use of the OS's security policies you should be all right. Im noit certain I'd wish to put sensitive coporate data in such a DB though
I'd rather be riding on the Tiger 800 or the Norton

Try SQL Lite, this might solve your problem.
