I was wondering if anyone has experience with Xeround, ClearDB or any other good Database as a Service vendors? Good / bad / indifferent?
We currently don't have a DBA in-house and our dev team has limited experience maintaining and scaling DBs so want to at least initially, outsource the admin, tuning, back up, replication, patching etc., but also want a service that can help us scale easily (with out us having to do a ton of analysis and manual deployments). We're in the process of launching a web app (semi private beta) running on EC2 LAMP stack.
I've looked into AWS RDS but that doesn't really auto scale, still require a fair amount of manual intervention and focus primarily on read replicas only, not to mention downtime with backups unless you're using multi A-Z.
