    Smile Database Concept - Online CRM

    Hi All,

    Hope your all well, I'm new to the site but looking for some intelligent advice as to what the best way is to go; in regards to developing a database.

    I'm currently at the market research phase for a business I will be launching at the end of the following year.

    My concept is for an online database that will allow for the continual management and development of internal processes within the business, all of them! So as you can imagine not a small task, and something that will be in continual development.
    Some basic specifications are as follows;
    1. I want the database to be accessible from the internet.
    2. I want multiple users to be able to access the database.
    3. The purpose of the database/program is to monitor all aspects of the business from logistics through to sales management, competitive strategy and external economic health.

    If any of you would be kind enough to take the time to have a gander at the question below it would be a huge help, questions below;
    1. I want to develop an online business management system for my business. What is the best application, language, package to use to do this?
    2. Does anyone have any experience in developing the above, if so would you be outline any key problems, techniques or helpful hints that would be able to assist me?
    3. I'm a novice so need all the help I can get, could anyone recommend any resources or books which will help with the development/planning/implementation?

    I know this is a huge task ... new learning, extensive planning, testing and development (enough for a whole team) but I'm here for all the advice I can get so please be critical and help me along.

    Cheers,

    Will

    Most are.

    Not at all specific. . . You will need to have much greater detail before you proceed.

    Depends on many factors not yet shown.

    Does anyone have any experience in developing the above, if so would you be outline any key problems, techniques or helpful hints that would be able to assist me?
    Many of us have probably done similar things, but until you provide more specifics, i personally do not know how to reply.

    I'm a novice so need all the help I can get, could anyone recommend any resources or books which will help with the development/planning/implementation?
    Once you have decided on which platform and software to use, suggest your organization invest in some formal training for that configuration. Then you might consider "renting" someone with much of the experience you need to further teach/mentor.

    Most likely it's the one you, your architect, and your developers are familiar with.

    "It does not work" is not a valid problem statement.

    What would your solution offer that other Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) vendors don't do already? I'm puzzled by the title of your post. CRM usually means Customer Relationship Management, which is something different from what you seem to be describing - maybe a subset of it, but different.

    Obviously you should ask your questions of your development team since they are best placed to answer them. When you have a budget and the beginnings of a team lined up - that's seems like the right time to consider what technologies to use.

    Will, what you are seeking to do will require a large team of IT professionals, probably including two or more database specialists.
    Hire one, and then seek their advice on the architecture.
    If it's not practically useful, then it's practically useless.

    Thanks

    Hi Guys,

    First of all thanks a bunch for the advice so far! It's great to get on a forum and actually get some responses so quickly, so big thumbs up and thanks again!

    After looking through the above advice I've re-homed myself and realize that I need some thorough planning and research prior to even asking questions. I have a concept but no definable, so in turn no direct questions.

    I'll be back, with better questions .

    Best, Will
