    Paradox 7 on Windows 8

Having used Paradox 7 on win95 thru to win 98, XP, and Win7 using the compatability tab making it WinNT with SP4 all was well, i have just installed Win8 on a test machine, and installed Pdx 7 - sadly there is no compatability drop down for WinNT SP4 - so what do i do know. The program opens, but when i go to select my data source it is telling me (or rather not allowing me to select my database on account of the OK button being greyed out).

When i open Pdx direct, and then go to the Alias Manager, to manually configure to select my d/base the OK button is still grayed out.

Is it easy to upgrade to Corel Paradox 11 - or does it mean re-writing loads of stuff to allow the database to actually work..

    Please help..

Luckily i still have (and my clients) still are using Windows 7 or lower.

Talking Paradox 7 on Windows 8

20 years it may be - but it works well enough bar the Win8 glitch.
I have invested in Paradox 11 - but it is asking me to recompile from source.

I wish there was an "import from..." button so that i could simply import all my Pdx 7 tables and data.

I can open each table and view the information - but cannot get it into Pdx 11 - so until i have eons to spare - i am looking for a quick Pdx 7 compatibility re-solve - there is a registry edit (for those that do not want to alter the shortcuts compatability - but alas that still excludes the NT compatability - i am wondering if i find the reg edit on my win 7 machine, and copy that accross - it may work. fingers x'd

first, let's talk about your data.. there is no "import" process because a paradox table is a paradox table.. the default from v7 to now, is a level 7 table.. at worst, you're using a level 4 or 5 table, which is still fine, with one restriction.. a level 4 or 5 table must use short filename and short folder name..

now your code.. yes, any time you open in a later version, you must recompile the code..

other than that, if everything has been working, so far there is no reason to move to v11.. it offers nothing that your current deployment doesn't offer, if your current deployment works.. as for win 8.. again, you don't have the gazillions of other developers to lean on, like in the old days.. most of us are gone and/or have moved on..

you can reply to me again, if you wish, but after that, please go to the community site, like I asked.. I'm the only one here..

it's a universal issue.. newest Win versions don't support the old-style help file format, by default.. it's been discussed on the community support group many times

i have been on the Paradox forum .... in search...

I typed "Installing paradox 7 onto Windows 8"...

your concern isn't with pdox7 installation, your concern is that all versions of paradox use the old-style windows help files.. this is a generic issue, other programs have this problem, too.. you can post a message on the community group, you don't have any need to e-mail the admin.. sorry to not be more help to you, but that's why almost every thread here says "go to the paradox community group"

There may not be a way to do it in the GUI, but an sdb file created for Windows XP works just fine in Windows 7 and 8.

I've attached a zipped sdb file. To install it run:
    'sdbinst.exe path/to/paradox7.sdb'

hi, Pete.. what's the purpose of the sdb file? I've been doing this since the beginning of Paradox, and I never heard of this before..
