    which is suitable database type for managing huge transactional data for big websites

    I am currently working on project with one of the e-commerce websites.there is huge amount of transactional data of daya to day records .. currently the system is working on MY SQL .. is there any beter database system for such requirement ?? can no sql databases be used ??

    Think about this . . .

    Amazon runs on a "transactional" database system. As do most of the large point-of-sale companies. And the big banks. And travel sites. And e-bay.

    Rest assured that many places deal with what are probably larger volumes than you will have to deal with.

    None of them run on something that was downloaded/installed for free.

    Possibly i misunderstand your question.

    can you suggest some particular database engine for such purpose ??
    i am currently using mysql... which will be better option instead ??
    and why?

    Maybe a $10,000 computer with a free database engine like mysql or postgres, will perform better than a $2000 computer with an $8000 commercial database.
    You will have to supply your own numbers.
