I was reading some of the posts about centralized databases but couldn't find an approach to my issue.

Here it is...

I am the IT manager of a small business and need to decide what's best...
We have n places with a computer in each one saving data received by camera's connected direct to them. We have to collect the data so it can be processed as a total so the first approach was having a central server, either physical or in the cloud, where every amount of time received the info from the distributed computers but my boss defends, as the amount of data grows fast, the column where the relation place-data would eventually overcome the storage of the server said above.
Another approach proposed by him was to have every computer it's individual database and to recollect and process the data individually so my question is...

How true is that the one added column in the central server would lose in terms of performance against the multiple individual databases?
And even if either is true, how could scalabillity would be compromised as long as the computers grew in the future?
