Unanswered: How to break up unit of work for a Merge statement

The system that is in question is running DB2 LUW V9.7.5 on Windows 2008.

Periodically our application team runs a merge statment which generates in excess of 100 GB of log space before committing. The other day the inevitable happened and they filled all of the online logs without a commit, causing the system to rollback for a few hours, making the system unusable. The solution the app team would like is for me to increase the amount of online log space, which will work for a few months until they have more data and they blow out the log space again, causing a longer rollback.

Question: Does anybody have any suggestions/experience of how to break a merge statement into chunks?

Probably by using an appropriate WHERE clause.
"It does not work" is not a valid problem statement.
