    There are several possible problems:
    1. The server does not exist (usually a typo in the server name).
    2. Improperly configured DSN or connection string (review and correct as needed)
    3. No common communications protocol between the SQL Server and SQL client. (activate a common protocol)
    4. No connectivity between the SQL Server and SQL Client (ask networking staff for help with this)
Depending on your level of expertise, you may have questions about these points. That's normal and expected, but until I understand your background and/or your questions I can't respond more appropriately.

do you get a reply when you go to the DOS prompt and type...

ping <insert your server name here>
“If one brings so much courage to this world the world has to kill them or break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.” Earnest Hemingway, A Farewell To Arms.
