Do you have a sequential key or will you be able to identify rows already updated?

update commit after so many rows are updated shell script

    isql -Usa -Sservername <<EOF > output.out
    use database_name
    go
    set rowcount 1000
    go
    declare @rc int select @rc = 10 while @rc > 0
    begin
    UPDATE table_name
    set column = value

    select @rc = @@rowcount

    dump tran database_name with truncate_only
    end
    go
    EOF
