Unanswered: clone db2 database using similar method like Oracle rman duplicate

    Hi,
Anyone know db2 has this duplicate database feature pretty similar to rman duplicate capability, can just run without need to backup of source database ?

    Thanks.

Good DBAs are not formed in a week or a month. They are created little by little, day by day. Protracted and patient effort is needed to develop good DBAs.

The architecture of how db2 does backups is what I feel is one of the biggest differences between DB2 and Oracle. DB2's backup management was designed for the backup info to be tied to the database directly, whereas when Oracle introduced RMAN to manage the backups (yes I know there were ways to manage Oracle backups before RMAN), Oracle went with a central "backup" server to manage your backups. Totally different than DB2. The easiest way I have found to clone/duplicate a db2 database is to do the following:
    1. Capture the DBM config
    2. Install DB2 on the new server
    3. Create your instance on the new server (update the DBM config with info from step 1)
    4. Restore the database on the new server (redirected if changing paths etc), rollforward if online backup etc.
Now if you are going to be keeping this new clone current, there are many other options you could pursue (HADR, Replication etc). Let me know if you need more info. As an aside, my understanding of Oracle Duplicate Database feature in RMAN is it starts with a backup, just does it behind the scenes.

    Hi All,
Thanks for the reply. For DB2 database duplicate do you have any working sample especially for the restore with redirect command. Assume my

Regarding Guy Przytula approach, is this suitable for DW environment, cause my db here is around 4TB size, I afraid with this export and load approach, it will take long to complete compare to redirect method.

    Appreciate all the input.
