Smile Unanswered: Oracle to big data Greenplum

My friend and I discuss a catalog problem before I was onsite and this discussion came up today about patching the Linux environment with automatically updates postgress databases but does not update oracle. The Oracle services must be taken off line. It occurs to me that the disconnect would cause such a problem once the data has been passed from Oracle to Greenplum.
    Problem
":But you need to know how to debug catalog issues and things like that--what we've been having problems with. We've had a few people leave when asked to do something (practically) impossible with the Greenplum"

    Do you agree??

on *nix Oracle has NO services so I have no idea to what you refer.

Oracle database usually acts a server; but can act as a client.
WRT to Oracle & Greenplum, which acts as the server & which acts as the client?

    please quantify "big data".
BTW, at what size does data go from being OK to being big data?

The project I've worked on was a big data greenplum data warehouse. I'll say it's a state agency. In terms of volume and speed, it base on what your specific requirement for on average of 10,000,000 rows daily.
