Unanswered: Controll in code shows to Null but is not

I have some code that rolls through the controls on a form and if the control is null it alerts the user

    dim ctl as control

    for each ctl in me
    If IsNull(ctl.Value) Or ctl.Value = "" Then

my code for the alerts is her

    next ctl

This worked fine until today when I fired up the DB and selected the the item from the control (combo7)

when the code ran to evaluate the combo7 it is flashing cannot contain a null value

however in the immediate window if I step through the code and type
?ctl.name to verify it is combo7 it echos back combo7 and then when I typr
?ctl.value it shows the text that is in the control - but when the code evaluates the isnull function it is showing null?????

    any help would be appreciated
