Backup uses memory from the utility heap.
If you ask how much memory backup uses if you don't specify a number of buffers and buffer size for backup, then you can do the following:
If you are at 10.1.2 and newer you should look at the db2diag.log after a backup completion.
You will get something like this:
    Code:
    Number of buffers = XX
Buffer size = YY (ZZ 4K pages)

BM# Total I/O MsgQ WaitQ Buffers KBytes
    --- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- --------
    ...
If you are at 9.7 or pre 10.1.2 you can set the following registry variable to get this information:
    db2set DB2_BAR_STATS=YES

Finally, you can compare XX*ZZ and UTIL_HEAP_SZ.
    Regards,
    Mark.
